Vintage Swing Jazz reminiscent of the 1930’s

The 2010 Music in the Park concert series presented by Wells Fargo Bank kicks off in City Park on Wednesday, June 23rd, at 6:00PM.  Celtic Duo Kevin Burke & Cal Scott, whose latest CD “Across the Black River” shows up on the New York Times list of “most notable world music CDs of the last year”, will headline the June event.  The duo will appear on the Griffith Motors Main Stage.

This year’s Music in the Park offers an eclectic mix of musical genre’s in the four concert series.  In addition to the June 23 Celtic duo, Lee Highway will offer classic bluegrass and gospel tunes on July 14 as part of Fort Dalles Days & Rodeo.  Legendary bluesman Curtis Salgado and three time Muddy Award winner Alan Hager will appear on August 11.  And on September 1st the Stolen Sweets offer an evening of vintage swing jazz and vocal harmonies.

The 2010 concert series will see some changes from previous years.  First, the schedule has been pared down to one concert per month (June, July, August and September) rather than the every other week schedule of previous years.  Concerts also will take place on Wednesday evenings rather than Saturday.  “We wanted to ramp up our talent line-up without breaking the bank,” said Dana Schmidling, Chamber Executive Director.  “Getting off of Saturday night and scaling back from six to four concerts allowed us to do that,” she said.  Victor Johnson, entertainment coordinator for the event, indicated that the change allows entertainers to accept higher paying Saturday night gigs, giving the Chamber the ability to negotiate better fees for evenings that generally offer entertainers fewer opportunities.

The concert series is also sponsored by Columbia River Women’s Clinic, Mill Creek Point Senior Living, The Dalles Disposal, Windermere Glen Taylor Real Estate, Thomas C. Peachey Atty, Gene & Dixie Parker, Hire Electric, Brown Roofing,  Mid-Columbia Vision Source and Byers Neumayer & Bradford, and THE ANZAC TEA PARLOUR.

A limited number of Friends of Music in the Park sponsorships are available.  Contact Cal McDermid at 541-296-2231 or membership@thedalleschamber.com.

On Saturday May 8th, The Dalles Young Professionals Network is hosting a

“Save Taylor Lake” Clean Up Project

On Saturday May 8th, The Dalles Young Professionals are hosting a “Save Taylor Lake” clean up project starting at 8am-2pm. This project is sponsored by both C.I.T.O/Geocaching and the Oregon SOLV Organization. Kase Construction and Wasco County Conservation District are local sponsors that will provide equipment to haul the trash out. Wasco County Landfill is also a sponsor who donated a place for the trash to go. Everyone is ganging together for Taylor Lake, a family friendly natural gathering area which can be used for fishing, hiking, biking, or for a simple family picnic.

Taylor Lake has been a place that father’s have taken their sons for generations to go fishing or where families have gone to hike around and enjoy the beauty of the wildlife. Recently in the past 10 years or so this location has been forgotten and is slowly becoming a dumping ground for both trash and drug paraphernalia. Please join the Young Professionals in this clean up and great attempt to preserve a part our history and heritage. This lake is worth saving and is also a great link to both the riverfront trail and the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center. Please call Stephanie at 541-296-2231 today and put your name on a list as a volunteer for May 8th. Please bring some sunscreen, some friends, and a great attitude! Call today to volunteer.

From I-84 turn off on Exit 82. Turn North on River Road, follow this road for less than 1/2 mile and Turn Left of River Trail Way. Follow River Trail Way 1/4 mile and park your vehicle in the open lot on the right side of the road.

Sponsored by: C.I.T.O./Geocaching, Oregon SOLV, Kase Construction, Wasco Conservation District, Wasco County Landfill, Spooky’s, Imperial River Company and NW Natural.

Trash Bag Sponsors:  Hattenhauer Distributing Co., Napa Auto Parts, CH Urness Motors Co., Nelson Tire Factory, Mac Solutions, Centerpointe Community Bank, Design Structures, Devco Mechanical and Columbia Gorge Insurance Agency.
