Vintage Swing Jazz reminiscent of the 1930’s

The 2010 Music in the Park concert series presented by Wells Fargo Bank kicks off in City Park on Wednesday, June 23rd, at 6:00PM.  Celtic Duo Kevin Burke & Cal Scott, whose latest CD “Across the Black River” shows up on the New York Times list of “most notable world music CDs of the last year”, will headline the June event.  The duo will appear on the Griffith Motors Main Stage.

This year’s Music in the Park offers an eclectic mix of musical genre’s in the four concert series.  In addition to the June 23 Celtic duo, Lee Highway will offer classic bluegrass and gospel tunes on July 14 as part of Fort Dalles Days & Rodeo.  Legendary bluesman Curtis Salgado and three time Muddy Award winner Alan Hager will appear on August 11.  And on September 1st the Stolen Sweets offer an evening of vintage swing jazz and vocal harmonies.

The 2010 concert series will see some changes from previous years.  First, the schedule has been pared down to one concert per month (June, July, August and September) rather than the every other week schedule of previous years.  Concerts also will take place on Wednesday evenings rather than Saturday.  “We wanted to ramp up our talent line-up without breaking the bank,” said Dana Schmidling, Chamber Executive Director.  “Getting off of Saturday night and scaling back from six to four concerts allowed us to do that,” she said.  Victor Johnson, entertainment coordinator for the event, indicated that the change allows entertainers to accept higher paying Saturday night gigs, giving the Chamber the ability to negotiate better fees for evenings that generally offer entertainers fewer opportunities.

The concert series is also sponsored by Columbia River Women’s Clinic, Mill Creek Point Senior Living, The Dalles Disposal, Windermere Glen Taylor Real Estate, Thomas C. Peachey Atty, Gene & Dixie Parker, Hire Electric, Brown Roofing,  Mid-Columbia Vision Source and Byers Neumayer & Bradford, and THE ANZAC TEA PARLOUR.
